    Summary:

    The California Folk Music Project of the California Work Projects Administration (WPA) was conceived and directed by Sidney Robertson Cowell and co-sponsored by the Music Department of the University of California, Berkeley, and the Music Division, Library of Congress from 1938 to 1940. Additional support was provided by the New Music Society of California and the Society of California Pioneers. The resulting collection of sound recordings, photographs, correspondence, field notes, and drawings documents the musical culture, including religious music and folk song, of many ethnic and English-language performers in northern California. The collection includes the documentation of the music of Anglo Americans, Armenians, Assyrians, Basques, Croatians, English, Finns, Hungarians, Icelanders, Italians, Norwegians, Russian Molokans, Scots, Portuguese, Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Spaniards and Spanish Americans from 1938 to 1940. The sound recordings were deposited in the Archive of American Folk Song at the Library of Congress in 1940. The collection also includes a few instantaneous sound discs made by Sidney Robertson Cowell in Missouri and Iowa for the Farm Security Administration in 1936-1937, and includes folk music research, writing, photographs, and technical drawings and sketches of the musical instruments, generated by Cowell and by the WPA staff who worked for her, plus related documents to 1991.

    Summary:

    Collection of field recordings of interviews and administrative files generated by and curated by Paula Morin and the Nevada Arts Council for an exhibition titled "Honest Horses: a portrait of the mustang in the Great Basin," circa 2002, and later as a traveling exhibition. Morin photographed wild horses in the Great Basin and interviewed Nevada residents and others about the complex issues regarding wild horses and ecology. Interviewees include ranchers, buckaroos, outfitters, horse trainers, veterinarians, professors of animal science, researchers from the United States Department of Agriculture, the Bureau of Land Management, the Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the Nature Conservancy, the Commission for Preservation of Wild Horses, the National Wild Horse and Burro Center, National Mustang Association, other advocacy organizations, and writers. Most interviewees were from Nevada, others were from California, Idaho, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Oregon. Manuscripts include the edited narratives of the interviewees; edited copies of transcripts; biographical profiles; transcripts from speeches; copies of published articles on feral horses and habitat; pamphlets; and correspondence with Paula Morin and with folklorist Andrea Graham of the Nevada Arts Council. Selected narratives were included in Paula Morin's book titled Honest Horses: Wild Horses in the Great Basin (Reno: University of Nevada Press, c2006).

    Summary:

    Collection of photographs, audio recordings, ephemera, flyers, and programs which document the east and west coast folk and rock music scenes during the 1960s and 1970s including the Sky River Rock Festival, the Indian Neck Folk Festival, and various concerts. Photographs represent Earl Crabb's documentation of music events and his studio work. Earl Crabb photographed weight-lifting, fashion, album and magazine covers, circus performers, theater events, as well as people, markets, cities, and events in countries around the world. Ephemera includes flyers from folk clubs such as Cafe Yana in Boston, Massachusetts; Club 47 in Cambridge, Massachusetts; and the Freight and Salvage coffeehouse in Berkeley, California. Collection includes editions of Broadside magazine, Hootenanny, and the Philadelphia Folksong Society's Tune Up, which advertised these events. Of special interest are photographs from the Sky River Rock Festival, 1968-1970, in Washington State, and early editions of "Humbead's Revised Map of the World" produced in Berkeley, California. Sixty-two audio recordings in the collection, made during the 1960s and 1970s, include concert and coffeehouse performances by the Cleanliness and Godliness Skiffle Band, Wayne Smith and Ry Cooder, Tom Danaher, Dave and Megan Marash, Styx River Ferry, Hank Bradley, Ace Martel, Erik Frandsen, Jim and Jesse McReynolds; a recording of author Joseph Campbell, and others; some recordings are unidentified.

    Summary:

    The collection consists of manuscript materials, sound recordings, graphic materials (including color slides, black-and-white negatives, and photographic prints), and moving images collected during a field research project documenting Italian American occupational, cultural, and religious traditions in several locations in the western United States. Fieldwork was conducted in Gilroy, California; San Pedro, California; Pueblo, Colorado; Carbon County, Utah; Walla Walla, Washington; and several mining and ranching communities in Nevada by staff of the American Folklife Center. The project was part of the Quincentenary Celebration of Christopher Columbus sponsored by the Library of Congress in 1992. It produced a traveling exhibition and book of essays, both titled, "Old Ties, New Attachments : Italian-American Folklife in the West."
