The Business Papers Series is divided into three subseries: Charles Mingus Enterprises, Inc., Debut Records, and Jazz Workshop. Mingus founded Charles Mingus Enterprises, Inc. to record his albums and fulfill record orders through the mail rather than through distributors. This subseries contains correspondence, records of expenses, financial papers, royalties statements, record orders, and travel documents from Mingus’s national and international tours.
Debut Records was a label co-founded by Mingus, Celia Mingus, and Max Roach that officially incorporated in 1952. Though the label closed only five years later, they recorded and produced early albums by jazz musicians such as Hazel Scott, Hank Mobley, and Miles Davis. The label’s most ambitious project was Jazz at Massey Hall, a three-volume recording featuring "The Quintet” of Mingus, Max Roach, Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, and Dizzy Gillespie, and a trio made up of Mingus, Powell, and Roach. The Debut Records subseries is the most extensive of the Business Papers series. It contains artists’ files, which consist of headshots, correspondence, contracts, and publicity; correspondence to and from Debut Records; contracts, licenses, and royalties statements; expense records and receipts; fulfilled and unfulfilled record orders; and travel documents that include receipts, itineraries, and contact lists.
Mingus founded Jazz Workshop in 1955 as a music publishing company so he could maintain control and rights over his compositions. Jazz Workshop was also the name of a rotating ensemble that included musicians such as Charles McPherson, Jaki Byard (who also arranged for the group), Dannie Richmond, and Jimmy Knepper. In addition to performing and recording albums, the Jazz Workshop ensemble played music by young composers so they could hear their music played by a live ensemble. The subseries contains contracts, correspondence, and financial papers.
