Music, 1932-1995 (continued)
BOX 1096-1583 Non-Holograph Music and Production Materials, 1932-1995
This subseries comprises a wide variety of items: copies of Bernstein manuscripts; scores in the hands of arrangers, orchestrators and assistants; copyist manuscripts; photo-reproductions of various kinds; and printed music. These materials came to the Library over several years and include items that were edited, printed, compiled, or published after Bernstein's death. Significant portions of the music are annotated by Bernstein, many of them quite heavily, to the degree that, in some instances, they might almost be considered holographs themselves. These annotations include corrections, performance markings, new and changed material, and notes to himself and colleagues. Many of the identifications, descriptions, and commentaries in this portion of the finding aid were transcribed from notes on envelopes, folders, or on items themselves and appear to be in the hands of Bernstein's musical assistants, Jack Gottlieb or Charlie Harmon.

For some works, there are materials for many productions. Candide, in particular, has materials identified as being for eighteen different productions. Other works have materials that represent their constant evolution during creation. Examples include: 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Mass, and A Quiet Place. There are sets of like materials that were used by various people; when possible, we have identified those individuals. Particularly with parts, there are often some sets that are organized in books for individual musicians, as well as folders for individual numbers. Similarly, full scores and piano-vocal scores may be in sets by show order and/or alphabetical order. Whenever possible, these groupings have been maintained as they were when they came to the Library.

The production materials are a fairly modest percentage of this subseries, but includes scripts, correspondence, business papers, notes, audition materials, and other items. In the case of Candide, there are also photocopies of Richard Wilbur's lyric sketches for the show and other materials, copied from the Richard Wilbur Collection at the Amherst College Library.

Those researching the music in the collection would be advised to consult both the holograph and non-holograph items for a given work, in order to get a complete picture of Bernstein's intent and the range from his initial conception to final thoughts.
First organized alphabetically by larger work title. Within these, the typical order is (where they exist): full scores, short scores or piano-conductor scores, piano-vocal scores, parts, scripts, and other materials. Some items may be further organized therein by smaller units, such as song titles, and/or arranged chronologically by year.
