   Summary:

   John Philip Sousa was an American composer, bandmaster, and arranger, known for his military and patriotic marches. Christopher Dodrill is an educator and noted Sousa researcher and collector. The collection includes many first editions of Sousa’s marches and concert works in mint condition, as well as many rare European editions of his works. It also contains published sheet music, photographs, promotional posters, advertisements, and posthumously produced commemorative mementoes.

   Summary:

   Leonard B. Smith (1915-2002) was an American cornetist, concert band conductor, and band music publisher. Smith is primarily known as the leader of the Detroit Concert Band (1946- circa 1990), and the approximately 3,200 titles in the concert band library comprise the largest portion of the collection. Also included is a portion of the Ford Sunday Evening Hour Orchestra music library, method books, chamber music, cornet and trumpet solos, clippings, correspondence, photographs, programs, and writings.

   Summary:

   Glenn Miller was an American band leader, trombonist, composer, and arranger. He is prominently known as the band leader for the award-winning Glenn Miller Orchestra and conductor of the Army Air Force Band during World War Two. This collection contains production and reference materials for The Glenn Miller Story, a biographical film of Glenn Miller's life and career. Materials include production reports, filming schedules, correspondence, photographs and film stills, scores, and a typed war diary compiled by Captain Don Haynes that covers Miller's time touring England in 1944 and in 1945 following his disappearance.

   Summary:

   Henry Donch was a musician, conductor, arranger, composer, and educator who lived in Washington, D.C. He led ensembles such as Donch's Band and Donch's Orchestra and taught violin, flute, clarinet, cornet, guitar, and banjo at Georgetown University. The collection is primarily comprised of printed and mansucript sets of parts for society orchestra and band that Donch used with his professional ensembles as they performed at events in the Washington, D.C., area and at summer resorts in the nearby mountains. There are also works for chamber ensembles, method books, and a small amount of miscellanous papers. Please note that the collection contains works with demeaning titles.

   Summary:

   Charlie Barnet (1913-1991) was an American bandleader, jazz saxophonist, composer, and arranger. The collection contains musical arrangements for approximately 650 songs and instrumental numbers used by Barnet and his band. The majority of these arrangements are represented by full scores, though thirty-seven are represented by parts only, and an additional thirty-one include both a full score and parts. Approximately fifty arrangers are represented in the collection, including Billy May, Andy Gibson, George Siravo, and Conn Humphries.

   Summary:

   Tommy Newsom (1929-2007) was a saxophonist, arranger, bandleader, and composer. The collection contains musical arrangements that he wrote for dance band, symphonic orchestra, and small ensemble. The arrangements include manuscripts, printed copies, and photocopies for both full scores and orchestral parts. Most of the music dates from his thirty-year stint with the Tonight Show band. A few of the arrangements are by other arrangers and are identified as such.

7. Music of Machito and his Afro-Cubans, 1930s-1980s

   Summary:

   Latin jazz musician and band leader Machito, formally known as Francisco "Frank" Raúl Gutiérrez Grillo, (circa 1908-1984) was active on the New York City jazz scene with his innovative band the Afro-Cubans from 1940 to the early 1980s, forming an influential legacy that includes salsa music and Afro-Cuban jazz. The collection contains approximately 150 manuscript and published compositions and arrangements performed by the ensemble, as well as clippings, papers, a concert poster, and maracas.
