Summary:
Collection of sound recordings of Washington, D.C. area folk music radio programs on WASH and WAMU-FM, hosted by John Dildine, with live interviews, and featuring some previously recorded selections. The collection also includes sound recordings of concerts, folk festivals (including selections from the Fox Hollow Folk Festival, 1968 and 1969) and other folk music events in Maryland; Virginia; St. Louis, Missouri; New York state, and other locations. Collection includes performances and interviews with well known musicians from the United States, Great Britain, Scotland, and Ireland; plus a few shows featuring recordings of music from Kenya and from India. Collection of audio recordings made at various bluegrass festivals and performances in the United States by Jun-ichi Yamada from 1972 to 1976 in Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and a few other unspecified geographic locations. The festivals include Carlton Haney's Bluegrass Festival at Watermelon Park, Berryville, Virginia; Bluegrass Music Festival in Bluegrass Park, Camp Springs, North Carolina; the Newgrass Festival of 1974; the Wise County Shrine Club Bluegrass Festival; the 2nd Carter Stanley Memorial Festival, McClure, Virginia; the 7th Annual Culpeper Bluegrass and Folk Music Festival, Culpeper, Virginia; Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Festival, Bean Blossom, Indiana; Old Time Family Bluegrass Festival, Callaway, Maryland; Georgia State Bluegrass Music Festival, Lavonia, Georgia; Bluegrass Bonanza Showcase, Indian Springs, Maryland; and the Indian Springs Bluegrass Festival, Hagerstown, Maryland. Zion, Georgia, in July and August 1977 in cooperation with the Arts Experiment Station of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. Topics of research were hymn singing, vernacular architecture, foodways, jokes, and stories from the region. Includes documentation of the exhibition "Folk Art and Folk Life," at the Library of Congress, and proposed publication projects to 1982.

The collection consists of sound recordings, video recordings, photographs, manuscripts, sheet music, printed ephemera, artifacts, administrative records, and ethnographers' field notes related to the 1978 Blue Ridge Parkway Project field survey, conducted by the American Folklife Center, Library of Congress, in cooperation with the National Park Service, in and around an area of the Blue Ridge Parkway at the Virginia and North Carolina border. The project documented old-time music, tales, hunting and hunting stories, farming, tobacco cultivation and auctions, vernacular architecture, quilting, foodways (including drying, canning, and baking), religious music and beliefs, as well as dance events featuring square dancing and flatfoot dancing. Recordings and photographs document local music (including concerts, fiddlers' contests, and music in homes), community events, church services and baptisms, local radio programs, and interviews with white and African American residents. .
