    Summary:

    American Folklife Center field project which documented ethnic, regional, and occupational traditions of Rhode Island, especially ethnic arts (African American, French-Canadian, Greek, Irish, Jamaican, Polish, Portuguese, Ukrainian, Italian, Lithuanian, Narragansett, and others), maritime activities, material culture, and local history. Documentation was created by fieldworkers Peter Bartis, Michael E. Bell, Thomas A. Burns, Carl Fleischhauer, Henry Horenstein, Geraldine Niva Johnson, and Kenneth S. Goldstein, project director, from July 15 to December 31, 1979. Sound recordings include interviews and documentation of a play, church services, music and dance, and other events. Subjects of photographs include Rhode Island houses, barns, beaches, yards, gardens, orchards, churches, cemeteries, street scenes, landscapes, sea scapes; religious processions; recreation, including baseball, horseshoes, sailing; restaurants and foodways; picnics; textile mills, sawmills; businesses; markets; Jamaican migrant workers; woodworking; boatbuilding; fishing, clamming; gunsmithing; taxidermy; arts and crafts; sand sculptures; musicians and dancing; and other subjects.

    Summary:

    The collection consists of sound recordings, video recordings, photographs, manuscripts, sheet music, printed ephemera, artifacts, administrative records, and ethnographers' field notes related to the 1978 Blue Ridge Parkway Project field survey, conducted by the American Folklife Center, Library of Congress, in cooperation with the National Park Service, in and around an area of the Blue Ridge Parkway at the Virginia and North Carolina border. The project documented old-time music, tales, hunting and hunting stories, farming, tobacco cultivation and auctions, vernacular architecture, quilting, foodways (including drying, canning, and baking), religious music and beliefs, as well as dance events featuring square dancing and flatfoot dancing. Recordings and photographs document local music (including concerts, fiddlers' contests, and music in homes), community events, church services and baptisms, local radio programs, and interviews with white and African American residents. .

    Collection of photographs taken by Tom Raymond documenting storytellers and audiences at the annual National Storytelling Festival, Jonesborough, Tennessee, from circa 1984 to 2003. Most are 35 mm color slides and negatives. The collection documents the major storytellers and performers at the festival with more than 1,500 photographs of storyteller Ray Hicks taken at the festival over the years and at his home in Beech Mountain, North Carolina.
