    The Randolph S. Rothschild Collection consists primarily of music and accompanying correspondence, programs, and reviews. The majority of the music in the collection is facsimile scores of compositions commissioned by the Chamber Music Society of Baltimore and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra from American composers such as Milton Babbitt, Henry Cowell, Ross Lee Finney, Lukas Foss, Ernst Krenek, Roger Reynolds, Christopher Rouse, Gunther Schuller, and Charles Wuorinen. Many of these scores are inscribed to Rothschild and signed by the composers, and a few include programs and reviews of the concerts at which they were performed.

    Summary:

    Sidney Robertson Cowell (1903-1995) was a folksong and ethnic music collector and recordist, ethnographer, ethnomusicologist, teacher, writer, and wife of composer Henry Cowell. The collection consists of her personal papers which document all aspects of her life and work. The collection includes correspondence relating to personal and professional matters; fieldwork reports, fieldnotes, song lists and other materials from her field recording projects and trips; articles, essays, reviews, and papers written by Sidney Robertson Cowell; articles and narratives by and about Henry Cowell; autobiographical narratives and essays, clippings, family histories and other materials relating to her professional career and personal life; photographs; teaching materials; and song sheets and song books. In addition, the collection contains photocopies of a selection of Henry Cowell holographs, several annotated by Sidney Robertson Cowell, and a selection of folk songs with piano settings by Henry Cowell in his own hand.

    Herman Langinger was a music engraver, printer, and editor for New Music Society of California and other influential music publishers. The collection contains pre-publication and published music materials, including annotated manuscript and holograph scores and proof copies, as well as correspondence with composers and publishing associates. It also includes a comprehensive run of published editions from New Music and various editions from other publishers with whom Langinger worked, namely his own Golden West Music Press in Hollywood, Calif., Delkas Music Publishing Company, and Affiliated Musicians, Inc.

    The League of Composers was founded in New York in 1923 to promote American composers and introduce audiences to the best in new music through high quality performances. Its quarterly journal, Modern Music, was published from 1924 to 1946, and edited by Minna Lederman Daniel. It is one of the most distinguished collections of criticism and scholarship concerning early twentieth-century musical arts. The archives contains materials documenting the cessation of the journal, correspondence, financial and budget documents, fundraising materials, clippings, committee meeting minutes, photographs and artwork, stage and costume designs, contemporary concert and festival programs, scrapbooks containing promotional materials, publications of the League, and writings by Lederman Daniel.

    The Seeger Family Collection documents the lives and careers of pioneering musicologist Charles Louis Seeger, his second wife, modernist composer Ruth Crawford Seeger, and their eldest daughter, folksinger and songwriter Peggy Seeger through their music manuscripts, personal and professional papers, and correspondence. The collection also includes papers relating to the Crawford family and materials associated with Pete Seeger, Mike Seeger, other Seeger family members, and Seeger/MacColl family members.

    Summary:

    Henry Cowell was an American composer, theorist, writer, pianist, and teacher. A member of the 1920s "ultra-modernists," Cowell's experimental compositions explored a myriad of unusual instrumental techniques and non-Western musical sounds. Works such as The Aeolian Harp (1923), The Banshee (1925), and Mosaic Quartet (1935) are seminal examples of his exploration of 'tone clusters,' or secondal harmonies, for expanding the musical sound palette. Cowell was also a prolific writer and editor who founded The New Music Quarterly in 1927 as an outlet for the musical works of modern composers. This finding aid collates classed holograph manuscript scores, sketches, and parts by Cowell that were donated to the Music Division beginning in the 1950s.

    Erick Hawkins (1909-1994) was an American choreographer and dancer and the founder of the Erick Hawkins Dance Company. Lucia Dlugoszewski (1925-2000) was an American avant-garde composer and a frequent collaborator with Hawkins. Hawkins and Dlugoszewski married in 1962. This collection includes choreographic notes and notation, musical scores by Dlugoszewski and others, writings, correspondence, photographs, performance programs, recordings, books, art catalogs, and papers pertaining to the Erick Hawkins Dance Company and Foundation.

The reports, correspondence, repertoire lists, and other files help document the project's work to supply depositories with music, recordings, and books on music from the United States and to provide access to the materials.
