Summary:
The Lester Horton Dance Theater was a modern dance company and school in Los Angeles in the 1940s and 1950s. Founded by dancer and choreographer Lester Horton (1906-1953), the company served as an incubator for the careers of a generation of dancers, including Alvin Ailey, Carmen de Lavallade, Bella Lewitzky, James Mitchell, Joyce Trisler, and James Truitte. The collection documents Horton's early life and career and the Dance Theater's activities under the management of Frank Eng after Horton's death. Materials include clippings, correspondence, costume and set designs, course descriptions, drawings, financial documents, music, photographs, programs, promotional materials, writings, and typed choreographic scenarios.

Daniel Nagrin (1917-2008) was an American dancer, choreographer, teacher, and writer. The collection contains materials relating to his life and career, and includes holograph and published scores, choreographic and dance technique notes, photographs, correspondence, marketing and fundraising materials, clippings, programs, teaching and administrative materials, production elements, articles by Nagrin and others, drafts of his books, business papers, and personal and biographical files. In addition, there are significant materials related to Nagrin's first wife, dancer and choreographer, Helen Tamiris.

Cesi Kellinger (1922-2014) was an antiquarian bookseller based in Pennsylvania. This collection consists of dance-related photographs, illustrations, books, promotional materials, performance programs, articles and clippings, and correspondence dating between 1842 and 1994. These items pertain to the careers of prominent dancers, choreographers, and educators, including Ruth St. Denis, Ted Shawn, and Martha Graham. Kellinger collected the items and donated them to the Library of Congress in 2011.

Erick Hawkins (1909-1994) was an American choreographer and dancer and the founder of the Erick Hawkins Dance Company. Lucia Dlugoszewski (1925-2000) was an American avant-garde composer and a frequent collaborator with Hawkins. Hawkins and Dlugoszewski married in 1962. This collection includes choreographic notes and notation, musical scores by Dlugoszewski and others, writings, correspondence, photographs, performance programs, recordings, books, art catalogs, and papers pertaining to the Erick Hawkins Dance Company and Foundation.

Denishawn, which modern dancers Ruth St. Denis (1879-1968) and Ted Shawn (1891-1972) founded in 1915, was a renowned dance company through which numerous prominent performers, including artists such as Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey and Charles Weidman, Louise Brooks, Anne Douglas, and Grace McCrea, received dance training and began their careers. The Denishawn Legacy Collection consists of programs, promotional materials, photographs, correspondence, articles, and scrapbook pages pertaining to the company and its members. These items also document the history and performances of Jacob’s Pillow, which Shawn founded in 1931 and directed until his death.

The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (AAADT) was founded by choreographer and dancer Alvin Ailey (1931-1989). Ailey used Lester Horton and Martha Graham technique and added movement expressive of African American culture and social dance to elevate African American experiences through his work. AAADT became one of the most prolific and celebrated American dance companies. The collection contains documentation of the creation and performance of dances for the AAADT, correspondence and administrative records related to the operation of the company, and promotional materials, photographs, programs, scrapbooks, and awards from throughout the lifespan of the company.
