    Summary:

    An ethnographic field collection of manuscript materials, graphic images, sound recordings, and moving images that document, for the most part, Romanian folk dance and music as well as costume, ritual, and customs. Music arrangements, choreographic diagrams, photographs, and programs document activities of the state dance companies, the Ciocîrlia and Perinitza Ensembles. Oral history interviews with the donor recorded in 1995 complement the materials. Manuscript material includes music arrangements, music transcriptions, dance notation, field notes, choreographic diagrams, ethnographies, dance indexes, analyses of meter and rhythm, and maps of dance distribution. Collection includes more than 2,000 notated folk dance variants, more than 3,200 audio-recorded melodies and approximately 4,000 notated dance melodies. The dance notation in this collection is a unique form developed by Gheorghe Popescu-Judetz to record Romanian folk dance.

    Summary:

    Collection of field recordings of interviews and administrative files generated by and curated by Paula Morin and the Nevada Arts Council for an exhibition titled "Honest Horses: a portrait of the mustang in the Great Basin," circa 2002, and later as a traveling exhibition. Morin photographed wild horses in the Great Basin and interviewed Nevada residents and others about the complex issues regarding wild horses and ecology. Interviewees include ranchers, buckaroos, outfitters, horse trainers, veterinarians, professors of animal science, researchers from the United States Department of Agriculture, the Bureau of Land Management, the Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the Nature Conservancy, the Commission for Preservation of Wild Horses, the National Wild Horse and Burro Center, National Mustang Association, other advocacy organizations, and writers. Most interviewees were from Nevada, others were from California, Idaho, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Oregon. Manuscripts include the edited narratives of the interviewees; edited copies of transcripts; biographical profiles; transcripts from speeches; copies of published articles on feral horses and habitat; pamphlets; and correspondence with Paula Morin and with folklorist Andrea Graham of the Nevada Arts Council. Selected narratives were included in Paula Morin's book titled Honest Horses: Wild Horses in the Great Basin (Reno: University of Nevada Press, c2006).

    The collection consists of field notes, interviews, curriculum materials, sound recordings, photographs, and one videorecording resulting from a survey conducted by the American Folklife Center, Library of Congress in 1982 which documented 23 ethnic schools in the United States.     Summary:

    An ethnographic field collection of sound recordings, moving images, photographs, and accompanying materials that document religious and secular music, dance, and ritual in the northeastern Brazilian states of Maranhão, Pará, Paraíba, Pernambuco, and also the state of São Paulo. Fieldwork was conducted in northeastern Brazil in 1937-1938, some audio recordings were accessioned in 1950. The collection includes correspondence between Harold Spivacke, then chief of the Music Division of the Library of Congress and Oneyda Alvarenga, Director of the Discoteca Pública Municipal de São Paulo (1941-1943), now Discoteca Oneyda Alvarenga (Centro Cultural São Paulo). Photographs document field research and include images of musical instruments and costumes in the museum in São Paulo. Silent black-and-white 16 mm film is comprised of 14 film rolls including footage of carnaval in Recife, Pernambuco; footage from Belém do Pará; most was filmed in Paraíba.

    Collection of audio and video recordings of oral histories with family members of people who lived in Luboml, Poland (now in Ukraine) between World War I and World War II conducted from 1994-2000, with transcripts of these interviews; original photographs; photographs copied from the personal archives of these family members and from other archives; original passports, immigration papers, letters (including letters of the Eiger and Ziegelman families), product labels, a few artifacts, one original 8 mm film shot in Luboml, circa 1932; and transparencies of maps of Luboml.     Summary:

    The collection consists of sound recordings, photographs, manuscript materials, videorecordings, publications, ephemera, administrative files, and field notes produced and collected during the 1977 Chicago Ethnic Arts Project field survey from 1976-1981; but primarily during fieldwork conducted by fourteen folklorists directed by the American Folklife Center in 1977. The final project report presented to the Illinois Arts Council summarized the current conditions and folk arts needs in a number of Chicago's ethnic communities. Materials from post-project activities such as workshops in the ethnic communities and a traveling photographic exhibit by Jonas Dovydenas are also included.

    Summary:

    Collection of correspondence, research notes, transcripts, sheet music, manuscript music transcriptions, song texts, song books, maps, and administrative documents dating primarily from the tenure of John A. Lomax and his son Alan Lomax at the Archive of American Folk Song, Library of Congress, from 1932-1942, but with a few items dating to the 1960s. Correspondents include various staff at the Library of Congress, in particular, Harold Spivacke; and folklorists, musicians, writers, academics, film directors, and others, including Huddie "Lead Belly" Ledbetter and Woody Guthrie; various government agencies including the Works Progress Administration, Federal Writers' Project, and War Department; broadcasting and record companies; publishers; and fans of Alan Lomax's radio shows, who sent in contributions of folk songs and folklore from their childhood and communities. Documents include drafts of speeches, lectures, articles, and drafts of their books for publication.

    Collection of photographic documentation of wild horse herds in the Nevada Great Basin made by Paula Morin during her work for the Nevada Arts Council, 1999-2001. The photographs were exhibited by the Nevada Arts Council in an exhibiton titled, "Honest Horses: A Portrait of the Mustang in Nevada's Great Basin."     The collection consists of sound recordings, video recordings, photographs, manuscripts, sheet music, printed ephemera, artifacts, administrative records, and ethnographers' field notes related to the 1978 Blue Ridge Parkway Project field survey, conducted by the American Folklife Center, Library of Congress, in cooperation with the National Park Service, in and around an area of the Blue Ridge Parkway at the Virginia and North Carolina border. The project documented old-time music, tales, hunting and hunting stories, farming, tobacco cultivation and auctions, vernacular architecture, quilting, foodways (including drying, canning, and baking), religious music and beliefs, as well as dance events featuring square dancing and flatfoot dancing.
