West and Ira V. West as mathematicians at the Dahlgren Naval Proving Ground (now the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division) as well as to their personal lives. Particularly well-documented is Gladys B. West's career and her contributions to the mathematical modeling of the shape of the Earth, later incorporated into the Global Positioning System (GPS). Additional material in physical format includes a dissertation journal, manuals, notebooks, and printed matter. Material in digital format also includes a map.

    Summary:

    The collection consists of 13 remote-sensing maps of locations in the United States, 1 remote-sensing map of the Amazon Basin, and 7 illustrations concerning the NASA Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS-1), which became known as Landsat 1. The materials are covered in Mylar and appear to have been part of an exhibition created by Gary W. North that includes one small banner. In addition, there are two unrelated volumes. One is titled Description of the Ordnance Survey Large Scale Maps, which was published around 1921 by the Ordnance Survey Office, Southampton. The second volume is titled Stereograms prepared by the University of Illinois Committee on Aerial Photography. The latter volume's materials date from the 1930s to the 1950s.

    The Charles Lee Burwell Collection consists of one model, consisting of rubber on foam backing, prepared for "Operation Overlord," the Allied invasion of Utah Beach, Normandy, France; and an operational plan, maps, aerial photography, and photographs assembled by Burwell in preparation for "Operation Anvil," an amphibious landing of Allied troops on the southern coast of France in August 1944.
