Summary:
The collection is comprised of field recordings made in Akron, Ohio, by John A. Lomax (on June 27-28, 1937), and Alan Lomax and Elizabeth Lomax (on November 3, 1937), of songs performed by Pearl R. Nye related to life on the Ohio and Erie Canal, plus photographs of canal life (some hand-decorated by Nye), and correspondence between Nye and Harold Spivacke of the Library of Congress, and manuscript and typed transcriptions of song lyrics sung and collected by Pearl R. Nye.

Summary:
The collection consists of manuscript materials, sound recordings, and photographs documenting the performance of bluegrass music from Ohio, blues music and African American a capella doo-wop from Washington, D.C., folk music from Bengal, India; Japanese music from Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rican cuatro and salsa music from Washington, D.C. recorded live at the Thomas Jefferson Building, Library of Congress, in concerts from May through September 1984, sponsored by the American Folklife Center. The concert of Japanese music was followed by a workshop in the Whittall Pavilion on Japanese brush painting.

Summary:
The collection consists of sound recordings, video recordings, photographs, manuscripts, sheet music, printed ephemera, artifacts, administrative records, and ethnographers' field notes related to the 1978 Blue Ridge Parkway Project field survey, conducted by the American Folklife Center, Library of Congress, in cooperation with the National Park Service, in and around an area of the Blue Ridge Parkway at the Virginia and North Carolina border. The project documented old-time music, tales, hunting and hunting stories, farming, tobacco cultivation and auctions, vernacular architecture, quilting, foodways (including drying, canning, and baking), religious music and beliefs, as well as dance events featuring square dancing and flatfoot dancing. Recordings and photographs document local music (including concerts, fiddlers' contests, and music in homes), community events, church services and baptisms, local radio programs, and interviews with white and African American residents. .

World War II rumor project collection, 1942-1943

Summary:
Manuscript collection created by the Office of War Information in 1942-1943. Field representatives of various federal agencies in 42 states enlisted individuals who collected rumors generated in the United States during World War II. These individuals or "correspondents" included dentists, beauty shop operators, policemen, proprietors, and librarians who had access to rumors in their communities. Reports were submitted to Dr. Eugene Horowitz at the Bureau of Public Inquiries of OWI, who organized the materials. Rumors, jokes, rhymes, and anecdotes about the war were also collected by teachers from African American and white high school and college students; a few drawings and cartoons are included with the submissions from students.

Summary:
The collection consists of photographs of quilts and quilters, essays, entry forms, and a few fabric and needlework samples submitted in three nationwide contests in 1992, 1994, and 1996 sponsored by Coming Home, a division of Lands’ End, Inc. home shopping service, and Good Housekeeping magazine. Approximately 13,100 entries for the three contests came from all 50 states and the District of Columbia with a few from Canada. Many styles of needlework, quilting, patchwork, appliqué, and embroidery are represented in the visual materials. The collection also includes correspondence and surveys from some contestants and administrative files related to judging the entries, exhibitions, and publicity.
