Biographical note
Sarah Gertrude Knott (1895-1984) was born in Kevil, Ballard County, Kentucky, and attended Georgetown Preparatory School (Ky.) 1919-1920, the University of North Carolina, Washington University in St. Louis (1928-1929) and several drama schools. She founded the National Folk Festival and served as its national director from its start in 1934 through 1971. During this time she also served as director of the first two Florida Folk Festivals (1953-1954). After her retirement she returned to Princeton, Kentucky and died there on November 20, 1984.
