Summary | Collection compiled by Commander Royal Lovell, USN, who commanded LST Group 50 during the Operation Neptune D-Day landings at Normandy, France during World War II. The collection includes four maps depicting important landing sites along the beach of Normandy: Gold, Juno, Omaha, and Utah. The maps, each labeled "Top Secret," were used to brief officers about the invasion plan and highlight the locations of important obstacles, natural features, and military installations likely to be encountered by the landing forces. Also included in this collection are three text documents that include: summaries of preparatory Allied intelligence; additional maps and photographs; orders for officers that include sailing times and instructions, signals and codes, and other logistical information; an after-action report of the Operation Neptune landings. Lastly, the collection contains the unbound personnel files of the archive's compiler, Royal Lovell. |
