Scope and Content Note
The Yale Newman Scripts Collection consists of scripts and notes from Newman's radio and television broadcasts from 1953-1962, including his coverage of the trial of Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann. Primarily based in London, Newman also broadcast from Paris, Algiers, Israel and other locations as events unfolded. A major focus of the collection is on Cold War era diplomacy and world events.
The scripts and indexes were originally bound together in 16 annual or semi-annual volumes. Each volume arranged the scripts in roughly chronological order (the 1953 volume in reverse chronological order), with each page individually numbered. Each volume contained its own index (found in Series 1, Subseries 3) which lists topics alphabetically and points to the corresponding page in the volume. Researchers are encouraged to consult these indexes for more advanced study of specific subjects.
The titles listed in the container list are derived wherever possible from the headings found at the top of each script, or where not available, from the volume indexes. As such, they use the terminology and nicknames assigned by Yale Newman to the greatest extent possible, subject to the need for clarity.
