WOR-AM was one of America's major talk and entertainment stations, and one of the original radio stations in the country. WOR-AM was started by Bamburger department store in Newark, New Jersey on February 22, 1922. Bamburger's was taken over by R.H. Macy in 1929 which then became the parent company until 1952, when Tom O'Neil of General Teleradio, a subsidiary of the General Tire and Rubber Company, purchased WOR and the Mutual Broadcasting Network, for which WOR was the flagship station.
