Scope and Content Note
The records of the Exchange and Gift Division of the Library of Congress span the years 1893-1979, with the bulk of the material dating from 1901 to 1966. The records document the activities of the Exchange and Gift Division, which was responsible for receiving items acquired through exchange, gift, transfer, and deposit. The records are primarily in English, with some German and Spanish. The collection is arranged in two series: Card Index and Case Files and Correspondence Files.
The collection’s series are listed and briefly described below. A fuller description of each series and a list of its contents can be accessed in the series descriptions within the container list.
The Card Index and Case Files are only available on microfilm and include a card index documenting the names of donors and depositors as well as correspondence regarding major gifts.
The Correspondence Files primarily contain correspondence and lists relating to both minor and major gifts as well as items deposited, returned, transferred, or acquired through the Library's international exchange program.
