Acquisition Information
The papers of Henry Rowe Schoolcraft were acquired between 1866 and 1942, partly as a gift from Mary Howard Schoolcraft and partly by transfer from the Smithsonian Institution.
Processing History
The papers of Henry Rowe Schoolcraft were arranged and described by Edwin A. Thompson and others in 1973. This description was revised by Harry G. Heiss in 1999. Further description of the papers and role of Schoolcraft’s wife Jane and the Johnston family in the collection was added in 2021. In 2024, boxes 60 and 61 were rehoused and the finding aid revised by Katherine S. Madison.
Transfers
The manuscript of Robert Strange's Indian novel, Eoneguski (1839), once associated with this collection, has been transferred to the Library's Peter Force Papers and Collection. Broadsides and pamphlets have been transferred to the Library's Rare Book and Special Collections Division where they are identified as a part of these papers. Maps have been transferred to the Geography and Map Division where they are identified as the Henry Rowe Schoolcraft map collection at https://lccn.loc.gov/2021588031. Patrons are encouraged to contact these divisions in advance of a research visit.
Microfilm
A microfilm edition of these papers is available on sixty-nine reels. Consult reference staff in the Manuscript Division concerning availability for purchase or interlibrary loan. To promote preservation of the originals, researchers are required to consult the microfilm edition.
