Acquisition Information
The papers of Hugh H. Smythe, sociologist and diplomat, and Mabel M. Smythe, economist and diplomat, were given by Mabel M. Smythe-Haith to the Library of Congress in thirteen installments between 1977 and 1997. The 2023 Addition to the papers was given to the Library of Congress by Elsie Taylor-Goins in 2021.
Processing History
The papers of Hugh H. Smythe and Mabel M. Smythe were arranged and described in 1994 by T. Michael Womack with the assistance of Patricia Craig, Sheila Day, and Susie H. Moody. The collection was expanded and revised in 2003 by Karen Linn Femia. The collection was again expanded and the finding aid revised in 2023 by Katherine Madison. Some items in the Hugh H. Smythe and Mabel M. Smythe Papers have undergone mold remediation.
Transfers
Items have been transferred from the Manuscript Division to other custodial divisions of the Library. A photograph of W. E. B. Du Bois has been transferred to the Prints and Photographs Division. Audio and video recordings have been transferred to the Motion Picture, Broadcasting, and Recorded Sound Division. All transfers are identified in these divisions as part of the Hugh H. Smythe and Mabel M. Smythe Papers. Patrons are encouraged to contact these divisions in advance of a research visit.
