Acquisition Information
The papers of James A. Michener, author, were given to the Library of Congress by Michener in numerous installments from 1955 to 1992.
Processing History
The papers of James A. Michener were arranged and described in two parts between 1956 and 1974. Part III was organized in 1999 by Michael Spangler with the assistance of Paul Colton, Patrick Kerwin, Sherralyn McCoy, and Brian McGuire. In 2001, portions of Parts I and II were reprocessed and the collection was prepared for microfilming by Michael Spangler with the assistance of Susie Moody. In 2022 restrictions expired and the Closed series in Part III revised to Formerly Closed.
Transfers
Items have been transferred from the Manuscript Division to other custodial divisions of the Library. Sound recordings have been transferred to the Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division. An original cartoon strip has been transferred to the Prints and Photographs Division. All transfers are identified in these divisions as part of the James A. Michener Papers.
