Acquisition Information
The papers of Edna St. Vincent Millay, poet and writer, were deposited and then given to the Library of Congress by her sister, Norma Millay, 1967-1975. Additional material was purchased by the Library in 1998. A small addition was given by Nancy Milford in 2006. Additional material was given by and purchased from the Edna St. Vincent Millay Society in 2023.
Processing History
A portion of Millay's diaries and notebooks has been available for research at the Library of Congress since 1969. Various proofs of Millay's books were added to the collection in 1978. The main body of the collection was received by the Library in 1998. All of these parts were incorporated into the arrangement and description of the Millay Papers completed in 2003 by Nan Thompson Ernst with the assistance of Michael W. Giese, Jewel R. Parker, and Chanté Wilson. Additional material received in 2006 and 2023 was processed and the finding aid revised in 2024 by Amanda Loeb.
Transfers
Items have been transferred from the Manuscript Division to other custodial divisions of the Library. Some books have been transferred to the Rare Book and Special Collections Division. Some photographs have been transferred to the Prints and Photographs Division. Sound recordings and motion pictures have been transferred to the National Audio-Visual Conservation Center. Some newspapers and magazines have been transferred to the Serial & Government Publications Division. Some musical scores have been transferred to the Music Division. All transfers are identified in these divisions as part of the Edna St. Vincent Millay Papers. Patrons are encouraged to contact these divisions in advance of a research visit.
