Scope and Content Note
The papers of Joseph Warren Keifer (1836-1932) span the years 1850-1865 and chronicle Keifer's service in the Union army during the Civil War. Included in the collection is Keifer's extensive correspondence with his wife, Eliza Stout Keifer. These letters reflect Keifer's attitudes and observations during military campaigns in Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia and cover such topics as camp life, morale, the New York draft riots in 1863, and the reaction in the army to the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.
In addition to this correspondence, the collection also contains military correspondence, a letterbook of the Third Brigade, Third and Sixth Army Corps (16 June 1863-20 June 1865), general orders in both printed and manuscript form, ordnance and paymaster records, casualty lists, reports on operations, and related material.
