Scope and Content Note
The papers of Curtis L. Malaney (1926-1989) span the years 1923-1989 and consist of a typescript written by Malaney and photocopies of naval court proceedings. Malaney's typescript, "Danger Bearing; Lord Nelson and Course 095," compares the conduct of Admiral Horatio Nelson during two naval engagements in 1797 and 1801 with the conduct of United States Navy officers who caused their destroyers to run aground off Pedernales Point, California, (known as the Honda Point disaster) in 1923. Background material for this paper includes a photocopied transcript of the naval court of inquiry investigating the incident and a photocopied transcript of Captain Robert Morris's subsequent court-martial.
