Scope and Content Note
The papers of Whitman Bassow (circa 1921- ), a journalist who reported from Moscow as a United Press International correspondent and as Newsweek's first bureau chief in the Soviet capital, span the years 1920-1990. They consist of material collected for his book The Moscow Correspondents: Reporting on Russia from the Revolution to Glasnost(1988). The bulk of the collection comprises transcripts of interviews Bassow conducted with correspondents who related their experiences working in the Soviet Union for various news organizations. These interview files, arranged alphabetically by name, also contain Bassow's notes, clippings, and occasional correspondence with interview subjects. There is also a file of photographs compiled for this book.
