Scope and Content Note
The papers of the family of Wade Hampton (1818-1902) span the years 1855-1935 and consist of correspondence, photographs, property titles, memorials, and notes. Correspondence includes letters from Wade Hampton to his sister, Mary Fisher Hampton, whom he addressed as "Fisher." Two of these letters, written towards the beginning and the end of the Civil War, contain reflective accounts of the war and Hampton's activities in particular. Later correspondence, 1888-1902, is addressed primarily to Hampton's son, Alfred, and includes letters from Wade Hampton concerning his estate, letters of introduction written for Alfred Hampton to officials in Mexico, a letter from Terence Vincent Powderly on the death of Wade Hampton, and a letter from Mary B. Bryan concerning Alfred Hampton's support of her husband, William Jennings Bryan. Among miscellaneous items is Alfred Hampton's transcription of his father's last words before his death on 11 April 1902.
