Scope and Content Note
The papers of Frederick Joseph Horne (1880-1959) span the years 1893-1967, with the bulk of the material concentrated in the period 1900-1945. The collection includes correspondence, reports, speeches and writings, aviator's logbooks, scrapbooks, printed matter, and memorabilia.
Horne's naval correspondence covers his entire career and contains orders, reports, records of his promotions, and routine communications. A file of personal correspondents includes letters of William Augustus Ayres, Clarence Darrow, Chester W. Nimitz, and Richard M. Nixon. Horne's service as attaché in Tokyo during World War I is reflected in his naval correspondence, in files pertaining to the coronation of Crown Prince Yoshihito as Emperor Taishō in 1915, and in several reports and drafts in the speeches and writings file. His activities as vice chief of naval operations during World War II are also documented in his correspondence as well as in files containing reports and material relating to Congressional hearings on appropriations for the navy. The speeches and writings file also includes items pertaining to the navy and to national defense. Scrapbooks contain material concerning Horne's studies at the United States Naval Academy and other memorabilia.
