Scope and Content Note
The papers of Josef Breuer (1842-1925) span the years 1859-1970 with the bulk of material dating from 1859 to 1925. The collection consists of correspondence, biographical material, legal documents, certificates, a eulogy, printed matter, photographs, and an oil portrait of Breuer. Most of the items are photocopies or transcripts. The location of the original documents is unknown.
Correspondents include Theodor Billroth, Franz Brentano, Siegmund Exner, Sigmund Freud, Theodor Gomperz, Friedrich Jodl, Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach, and various members of Breuer's family.
Typed transcripts of correspondence, only some of which can also be found among the photocopied manuscripts, are reproduced on microfilm received as part of the collection.
