Acquisition Information
The papers of James McHenry, U.S. secretary of war, member of the Continental Congress from Maryland, Continental Army officer, and physician, were obtained by the Library of Congress through gift, deposit, reproduction, exchange, and purchase from various sources from 1901 to 1986. An addition made to the collection in 1999 includes a letter of 1797 formerly in the division's Miscellaneous Manuscripts Collection.
Processing History
The papers of James McHenry were arranged and described by Gayle Thornborough in 1971 and by Allan Teichroew in 1985. The collection was expanded and revised by Karen Linn Femia in 1999. The finding aid was revised in 2009. The finding aid was updated in 2023 by Maria Farmer as part of a division-wide remediation project by the Inclusive Description Working Group.

A microfilm edition of part of these papers is available on six reels. Consult reference staff in the Manuscript Division concerning availability for purchase or interlibrary loan. To promote preservation of the originals, researchers are required to consult the microfilm edition as available.
