Scope and Content Note
The papers of Charles Maass span the years 1912-1924. Maass served as an assistant to the Special Panama Canal Commission created by the secretary of the War Department in 1921. Visiting the Canal Zone from June to August 1921, the commission was charged to report on the care, maintenance, sanitation, operation, and governance of the Panama Canal and the Canal Zone, including matters relating to the Panama Railroad and Panama Railroad Steamship Company. The collection includes drawings, notes, photographs, poems, printed matter, scrapbooks, writings, and a journal documenting Maass's tour of Panama, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, and Cuba.
