Scope and Content Note for Additions to the Collection
The Addition to the papers of Thomas Jefferson has been organized as Series 10 of the collection and consists of material from Series 1-9 that was not filmed or indexed as well as items received subsequent to the filming. The Addition dates from 1735 to 1943 and includes correspondence, notebooks, case book, garden book, farm books, volumes of financial records, newspaper clippings, and other material. Part A contains original documents, and Part B contains photocopies, transcripts, and facsimiles. Original letters to and from Jefferson are contained in the general correspondence of Part A. Correspondents and recipients include Anne C. Bankhead, Francis Eppes, Patrick Gibson, Alexander Hamilton, George Jefferson, Filippo Mazzei, James Monroe, and John Watson. A letter of 1815 from Jefferson to Joseph Milligan, Georgetown bookseller and binder, describes arrangements for the shipping of Jefferson's library from Monticello to Washington, D.C., after Congress agreed to purchase it to reconstitute its library burned by the British in 1814. The 2014 Addition is a single letter that has been added to the correspondence in Part A, Original Documents. In this 1802 letter, Jefferson asks William Duane to purchase books in Paris for the Library of Congress. The list of books requested is in the hand of Jefferson's secretary, Meriwether Lewis, with a note and signature in Jefferson's hand authorizing the request.
None of the material in the Addition is microfilmed or included in the published index. Selected items from the Addition are included in the digital version of Jefferson's papers.
