Scope and Content Note
The Washington Family Collection spans the period 1582 to 1965, with the bulk of the material dating from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The collection is a mixture of original documents, photostatic reproductions, transcriptions, and notes by or concerning family members related by blood or marriage to George Washington. The collection consists of correspondence, journals, financial papers, wills, deeds, surveys, genealogical notes, and a few oversize items. Topics include the disposition of family property including that of Martha Custis Washington and George Washington, involvement in public affairs, and details of personal life. Among the individuals represented are Burgess Ball, Bushrod Washington, George Corbin Washington, Lund Washington and his wife, Elizabeth (Betsy) Foote Washington, and Martha Washington.
