Scope and Content Note
The papers of Augustus S. Nicholson (1830-1911) span the years 1861-1934 and consist of financial records, wills, deeds, correspondence, and obituaries. Nicholson was a career military officer in the United States Marine Corps. A veteran of both the Mexican and Civil wars, Nicholson ended his forty-seven-year career as adjutant and inspector at the Marine Corps Headquarters in Washington, D.C., when he retired in 1894. The papers reflect his various duty assignments as well as his concerns regarding promotion and retirement. There are also papers dealing with the settlement of the estate of his daughter-in-law, Charlotte G. Nicholson, with her heirs in London, England.
