Provenance
The papers of James M. Cain, author, journalist, and screenwriter, were given to the Library of Congress by Cain and his literary executor, Alice M. Piper, between 1966 and 2002. An addition was given by Bruce Howard and I. Michael Schulman in 1983, and other additions were given by Sonia Faletti, Paul Kilroy, Tim Ormsby, and Lamonta Pierson between 2000 and 2011. Material was also purchased between 1983 and 2004.
Processing History
The collection was arranged and described in 1977 and expanded between 1982 and 2013. The finding aid was revised in 2013.
Transfers
Items have been transferred from the Manuscript Division to other custodial divisions of the Library. Prints and photographs have been transferred to the Prints and Photographs Division. Phonodiscs have been transferred to the Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division. All transfers are identified in these divisions as part of the James M. Cain Papers.
