Scope and Content Note
The papers of Elijah Walker Halford (1843-1938) span the years 1848-1938 and consist of correspondence, writings, scrapbooks, photographs, and printed matter. The papers relate primarily to Halford’s career as private secretary to President Benjamin Harrison, 1889-1893. Also included is a volume of articles from the Indianapolis Journal written by Halford during a trip to Europe in 1887. Correspondents include Chester A. Arthur, Cassius M. Clay, Calvin Coolidge, Frederick Douglass, Benjamin Harrison, Rutherford B. Hayes, Robert Todd Lincoln, William McKinley, Helena Modjeska, James Whitcomb Riley, Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, Lew Wallace, and members of Halford’s family.
