Scope and Content Note
The correspondence and autographs of George P. Merrill (1854-1929) span the year 1803-1926. In addition to letters written to Merrill from other scientists, there is correspondence addressed to James Hall, F. V. Hayden, and others collected by Merrill for use in writing The First One Hundred Years of American Geology (New Haven: Yale University Press, 1924). The correspondence pertains principally to geology, although there are letters from paleontologists, mineralogists, and petrologists. Correspondents include Cleveland Abbe, Louis Agassiz, Amos Binney, Thomas Cooper, Asa Gray, Clarence King, Robert E. Peary, Raphael Pumpelly, W. C. Redfield, Henry Rowe Schoolcraft, David Humphreys Storer, Eduard Suess, and John Torrey.
