Scope and Content Note
The papers of Hiram Collins Haydn (1907-1973) span the years 1874-1978, with the majority concentrated in the period 1945-1973. The papers primarily consist of manuscripts and galley proofs of some of Haydn's published and unpublished works, but also include correspondence, memoranda, articles, scripts, book reviews, financial and legal records, speeches, and printed matter. The collection is organized in the following series: General Correspondence , Editorial Correspondence , Subject File , Speeches and Writings File , and Addition .
Almost half of the collection consists of drafts of The Hands of Esau, Report from the Red Windmill, and Haydn's autobiography, Words & Faces. There is correspondence relative to his editing of two series, Makers of the American Tradition and Twentieth Century Library. His association with Random House, Bobbs-Merrill Company, and Crown Publishers is reflected in the Editorial Correspondence and Subject File series. Included in the Addition series are records documenting Haydn's association with Atheneum publishers. The General Correspondence contains family as well as personal letters.
