Scope and Content Note
The papers of Robert Latham Owens (1856-1947) span the years 1910-1941. The bulk of collection consists of material after Owen's retirement from the United States Senate in 1925. The papers are divided into three series: General Correspondence , Speeches, Articles, and Book File, and Miscellany .
The General Correspondence contains letters between Owen and members of Congress, cabinet members, and other public officials. Most of the correspondence relates to Owen's views on monetary matters, especially during the depression period. The Speeches, Articles, and Book File includes drafts of articles and speeches, and a manuscript of a book about money. Files in the Miscellany series include annotated copies of the Congressional Record and legislative bills, statistical information, newspaper clippings and printed matter relating to fiscal matters such as the causes of economic depressions and government control of currency and credit. Correspondents include Charles Gustav Binderup, Charles E. Coughlin, James H. R. Cromwell, Irving Fisher, James A. Farley, Carter Glass, Raymond Moley, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Jerry Voorhis.
