Scope and Content Note
The papers of Sanford Gottlieb (1926- ) span the years 1946-1995, with the bulk of the items concentrated in the period 1959-1995. The collection contains correspondence, writings and speeches, clippings, articles, transcripts of radio shows and testimony, and newsletters and other printed matter relating to Gottlieb's work for several public interest organizations in the fields of disarmament and foreign policy as executive director of SANE (formerly named National Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy), 1962-1977, New Directions, 1977-1979, and United Campuses to Prevent Nuclear War, 1984-1987. Included are extensive scripts and transcripts of Gottlieb's commentaries on the public radio show In the Public Interest between 1973 and 1983, scripts of his commentaries from 1992 and 1993 as senior producer of the television show America's Defense Monitor for the Center for Defense Information, and his writings, predominantly in newspapers and magazines, throughout the period. Publicity files of clippings and articles on Gottlieb and organizations such as SANE are also included in the collection. Gottlieb's work as a union organizer in the 1950s is also reflected in the correspondence and writings.
Gottlieb's activism attracted government scrutiny, and his papers include files provided in 1976 and 1977 by the Central Intelligence Agency, State Department, and Federal Bureau of Investigation at Gottlieb's request under the Freedom of Information Act. The State Department file includes summaries of messages concerning his 1966 meetings with Viet Cong representatives in Europe.
