Acquisition Information
The papers of James K. Polk, United States president, Speaker of the House and representative from Tennessee, and governor of Tennessee, were received through gift and purchase by the Library of Congress during the years 1903-2019.
Processing History
The papers of James K. Polk were arranged, indexed, and microfilmed in 1969. The additions of 1973 and 1977 were combined and are described as the 1977 Addition. The finding aid to the additions was revised and expanded in 1996. In 2009 the finding aid was expanded by including description of the main collection from the published index. A small addition was incorporated and the finding aid was revised in 2014. Another small addition was processed and the finding aid was revised in 2021.
Microfilm
A microfilm edition of part of these papers is available on sixty-seven reels. Consult reference staff in the Manuscript Division concerning availability for purchase or interlibrary loan. To promote preservation of the originals, researchers are required to consult the microfilm edition as available.
