Scope and Content Note
The papers of Edgar Stanton Maclay (1863-1919) span the years 1782-1918 and contain typescripts of essays, mostly written at the end of World War I which pertain to sea power and its effects, women in the United States Navy, and early American naval history. As a naval historian, Maclay published several books, including A History of American Privateers (Freeport, N.Y.: Books for Libraries Press, 1979 reprint). A reproduction of a print of the British dreadnought Mediator engaged with American-French forces off the coast of Spain in 1782 is also included in the collection.
