Scope and Content Note
The papers of Alexis Vasilévich Babine (1866-1930) span the years 1896-1953 and consist of correspondence, lectures, articles, book drafts, a typescript of a journal, notes and notebooks, diplomas, certificates, and passports. The papers reflect Babine's experiences during the Russian Revolution as superintendent of schools for the Vologda Territory, instructor at the University of Saratov, Russia, and as assistant to the American mission in Moscow. Also included are lectures and articles concerning the Bolsheviks, correspondence with Herbert Putnam relating to Babine's service at the Library of Congress, a draft in Russian of Babine's history of the United States, English translations of short stories, and holograph and typewritten copies of a play entitled We the People by Harold Anson.
