Scope and Content Note
The papers of Edward Frost (1801-1868) span the years 1795-1901, with the bulk of the material dated 1826-1866. They consist of correspondence, political, legal, and business records, commissions, appointments, wills, estate and plantation accounts, ledgers, and memorabilia relating to Frost's service as district attorney and states' rights delegate from Charleston to the South Carolina legislature and his interest in the Blue Ridge Railroad Company.
Frost’s activities as a plantation owner are documented by various financial records and correspondence with his family. His legal career is highlighted by material relating to various estates for which Frost was an executor, including the estates of Thomas Lynch Horry and William Blake. Also included are papers documenting his political career, such as letters from South Carolina governors James Hamilton and F. W. Pickens.
The Civil War is represented in various letters concerning the 1st South Carolina Volunteers and the difficulties of the Southern economy during wartime. Correspondents include Edwin P. Frost, F. H. Frost, Thomas Frost, Simon Lucas, William Miller, and James D. Treadwell.
