Scope and Content Note
The papers of the McCormick and Carey families of Wayne County, Ohio, span the years 1852-1997 with the bulk of the material dating from 1856 to 1883. They contain letters primarily from and about William McCormick of the Sixteenth Regiment and William H. Carey of the 120th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry reflecting their military service during the Civil War immediately prior to and during the Vicksburg Campaign in 1863. Also included are letters from other soldiers to William Carey's sister, Rachel B. Carey, and a letter of December 1883 to Mrs. J. B. McCormick describing missionary activities in Micronesia. Among the correspondence are an 1861 valedictory address by William Carey, his obituary, and a poem eulogizing him.
An addition to the McCormick family material includes a copy of a letter from William McCormick to his wife, Charlotte Scott McCormick, in 1863; a copy of pages from an album that includes a poem written by Charlotte following William's death at Vicksburg in June 1863; and a pamphlet by Joni Crane containing McCormick family genealogy and history and typewritten transcriptions of Civil War letters from or about William addressed to Charlotte.
