Scope and Content Note
The microfilm of the papers of the family of William Henry Whiting (1843-1925) spans the years 1731-1952 with the bulk from 1842 to 1900. The collection consists of genealogical information on the Whiting family in Great Britain and the United States including the family’s relationship to George Washington. Also included are eighteenth-century letters, bills of sale, and a petition, and later items such as steel engravings, photographs, and tintypes.
There is little material concerning Whiting’s life and naval career except for school certificates, a photograph album illustrating some aspects of his command of the training ship Saratoga (sloop-of-war), and his obituary.
