Scope and Content Note
The Herman K. Crofoot Collection of the papers of Francis Elias Spinner (1802-1890) spans the years 1792-1908, with the bulk of the material concentrated in 1825-1891. The collection is composed primarily of correspondence and scrapbooks supplemented by a portion of a diary, a letterbook, and miscellaneous items.
The correspondence includes letters from national political leaders relating to Spinner’s service as a congressman from New York and United States treasurer as well as his financial and personal affairs. The letterbook consists of letters sent by Spinner while he was cashier of the Mohawk Valley Bank, Mohawk, New York. Included in the collection is a diary, circa 1839 of his father, John Peter Spinner.
Correspondents include John Allison, George S. Boutwell, Schuyler Colfax, Roscoe Conkling, Jay Cooke, James A. Garfield, Ulysses S. Grant, John Alexander Logan, Edwin D. Morgan, Justin S. Morrill, Whitelaw Reid, and William Windom. Also in the collection is a letter of Alexander Hamilton dated 1792.
