Scope and Content Note
The Frances Carpenter Collection Relating to Frank G. Carpenter (1855-1924) spans the years 1875-1960, with the bulk of the collection dating from 1883-1924.
The collection consists primarily of scrapbooks containing clippings of Frank G. Carpenter's articles and columns, plus additional scrapbooks of clippings about his lecture tours, work in Washington, D.C., and his death in China. The material is related to the book Carp's Washington, arranged and edited by Carpenter's daughter, Frances Carpenter (1890-1972). The bulk of the collection forms her research for that book. There is also some correspondence between Frances Carpenter and the Evening Star (Washington, D.C.) newspaper. Another scrapbook contains clippings of reviews of Carp's Washington, and there is also a file of illustrations proposed but not used for that publication. Of interest is an autograph collection of people with whom Frank G. Carpenter corresponded including Calvin Coolidge, Warren G. Harding, Herbert Hoover, Alexander Graham Bell, Frederick Douglass, and Booker T. Washington.
