Scope and Content Note
The papers of Leland John Haworth (1904-1979) span the years 1944-1977, with the bulk of the material dating from 1963-1969. A majority of the material originates from Haworth's years at the National Science Foundation and with Associated Universities, Inc. The papers are in English and are organized into five series: Diary , Correspondence , Subject File , Speeches and Writings File , and Miscellany .
The Correspondence is composed of congratulatory letters, chronological files, nongovernmental correspondence, a small group of White House letters, and correspondence with Gerald Frederick Tape. The Subject File concerns Haworth's involvement with a myriad of professional associations and governmental activities. The Speeches and Writings File contains speeches beginning in 1961 when Haworth became a member of the United States Atomic Energy Commission through his final year at Associated Universities, Inc., in 1977. The writings deal almost exclusively with the Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, N.Y.
The collection is rounded out by a Diary of summary notes kept by Haworth after meetings with members of Congress and government officials and Miscellany containing telephone logs, minutes of meetings, and personal items such as awards, appointment books, clippings, biographical material, and photographs mostly of the Brookhaven National Laboratory.
