Scope and Content Note
The records of Former Members of Congress, Inc. Oral History Interviews span the years 1962-1985, with the bulk of the material dating from 1969 to 1980. The oral history project was known as The Modern Congress in American History. The records are organized into the following series: Part I: Transcripts, 1968-1981, Part II: Transcripts, 1970-1980, and Part II: Administrative File, 1962-1985.
The records largely consist of transcripts of interviews with former members of Congress conducted by members and staff of the organization between 1969 and 1980. Part I: Transcripts, 1968-1981 also includes transcripts prepared by other oral history programs that the staff of the organization found useful as background material. These transcripts are indicated by an asterik. Part II: Transcripts, 1970-1980 contains oral history interviews for most of the members listed and biographical files used as background material. A date appearing after the name of the congressional representative indicates the presence of a transcript. Some transcripts are duplicates of those found in Part I: Transcripts. Part II: Administrative File, 1962-1985 contains the working files of the oral history project including grants from the National Endowment of the Humanities and the Rockefeller Foundation, financial records, reports, and correspondence with both interviewers and interviewees and among the staff.
