Scope and Content Note
The papers of Irwin Hood Hoover (1871-1933) span the years 1909-1933. The collection consists chiefly of diaries and diary notes kept by Hoover concerning life in the White House. Also in the collection are a few pieces of correspondence and a number of notes addressed to Hoover. Many of the notes are from Woodrow Wilson, some relating to his wedding to Edith Bolling Galt. Included is an initialed delivery copy of Wilson's message to Congress on August 27, 1913, and a series of letters from Hoover to his family written during his trip to France with Wilson in 1918-1919. Beginning as an electrician and later as usher and then chief usher in the White House, Hoover had contact with ten presidents and their families, and the collection contains notes and reminiscences relating to each administration from Benjamin Harrison to Franklin D. Roosevelt.
