Scope and Content Note
The papers of David Murray (1830-1905) span the years 1866-1930, with the bulk of the material in the period 1873-1879. The collection contains notes on education, government, history, art, social conditions, and ethnology in Japan made while Murray was superintending the educational reform of the country. It also contains addresses and scholarly papers based on the notes; letters written from Japan by David or his wife, Martha A. Nielson Murray, to relatives in the United States; and addresses and papers on education in the United States, Native American wampum, lotteries, and other subjects.
