Acquisition Information
The papers of Bess Furman, author and journalist, were given to the Library of Congress in several installments by Furman and her son, Robert F. Armstrong, between 1954 and 1969.
Processing History
Furman papers received between 1954 and 1963 were processed in 1962-1963 by Grover Batts and Bessie Waters. Material received after 1963 was interfiled in the collection in 1979, with some rearrangement in 1980, by Mary Wolfskill. The finding aid was revised in 2010.
Transfers
Items have been transferred from the Manuscript Division to other custodial divisions of the Library. A painting by Ethel Evans, photographs, negatives, postcards, prints, and slides have been transferred to the Prints and Photographs Division. Books have been transferred to the Rare Book and Special Collections Division. Recordings and motion pictures have been transferred to the Motion Picture, Broadcasting, and Recorded Sound Division. Sheet music has been transferred to the Music Division. All transfers are identified in these divisions as part of the Bess Furman Papers.
